Martin County Cancer Patient Services Meeting February 6, 2024
The Martin County Cancer Patient Services met at the St. Mary’s Hall in Shoals, Indiana at 5:30 PM. Rheadawn Street opened with a prayer and welcomed the guests. In attendance were Rheadawn Street, Linda Knight, Shannon Wagoner, Rex Knight, Bob Toy, Carol Williams, Julia Albright, Kim Showalter, Retha Warner, Debbie Guy, Paul Wade, Kenley Shaw, Robin Hart, Tammy Salmon, Karen Jones, Rene Phillips, and Jim Force.
First order of business, President Street announced to the committee that Sandy Bratton had resigned as Vice President as well as the board would be voting an additional member to the board. There were only two volunteers interested in becoming members of the board; Karen Jones and Robin Hart. President Street asked for nominations from the board members. Shannon Wagoner, secretary, made the motion that Robin Hart be nominated as an additional board member. Linda Knight, treasurer, seconded the motion. Motion carried 3-0. Linda Knight made a motion that Karen Jones be nominated as a board member. Rheadawn Street seconded the motion. It carried 3-0. Linda Knight made a motion that Karen Jones be nominated as Vice President. Shannon Wagoner seconded the motion. The motion carried 3-0. Linda Knight made the motion that Robin Hart be named the additional board member. Rheadawn Street seconded the motion and it carried 3-0.
The minutes from the January meeting were reviewed by the board via email. Rheadawn Street made the motion to accept and Linda Knight seconded the motion. The motion carried 3-0. Linda Knight presented the treasure report. Shannon Wagoner made the motion to approve and Rheadawn Street seconded the motion. It was approved 3-0.
Grant Update and Donations: Rex Knight informed the committee that Duke Energy has no grant available to meet our needs. However, they do make donations. The Youth Ambassador MCCF grant has $499.95 available and is still open.

Birthday Blessings:
Tammy Salmon delivered 3 birthday blessing bags for January with 3 upcoming in February. Tammy suggested that it would be nice to send valentines to the cancer patients. Julia Albright volunteered to address the cards and send them out. She kindly donated the postage as well. A discussion was held regarding a gift of Easter Baskets for the patients. No decision was made.
Youth Ambassador: Robin Hart suggested two backpacks be filled by Kenley Shaw and donated to the grandchildren of a cancer patient. The patient is currently raising her grandchildren and they are struggling with her diagnosis. Kenley Shaw will be choosing items from Amazon to close the MCCF grant. Linda Knight will order the items.
Volunteers: Thank you to Julia Albright and Kim Showalter for their willingness to volunteer. We are always seeking new individuals to become a part of our mission.
Fundraising: Tammy Salmon and Rene Phillips have contacted a list of businesses for donations. The generosity has been outstanding with over a hundred items being donated! Tammy and Rene will take pics of the items and send them to Shannon via technology. Shannon will be hosting the online Auction from our MCCPS Facebook page. The Auction will begin on March 29th at 9AM and end on April 3rd at 9PM. Pick up will be on April 6th from 10-12 at the Loogootee Library.
No T-Shirts sold this past month. However, several were tossed into the crowds at the Shoals and Loogootee Cancer Awareness Games.
Upcoming Events: Spring Tea - April 27 @ 1:00PM Robin Hart, Karen Jones, Linda Knight, Kenley Shaw, Debra Guy, and Carol Williams will be planning the Spring Tea. Robin stated they will have a planning meeting soon and members will receive a text with date and time. There will potentially be a fashion show and a singer at the event. Suggestion was made to have limited tickets and sell prior to the event. Robin received donations from Stephanie Hembree for the decorations and tea sets. Kim Showalter also has multiple tea sets that she is willing to donate for the event.
New Business: President Street spoke with an attorney regarding the liability of the MCCPS asking volunteers to drive patients to appointments. The attorney confirmed that the board would be liable in case of an accident. Rheadawn got a quote from the insurance company and gave the information to the board and committee. A lengthy discussion was held regarding the concern of the MCCPS being involved in scheduling drivers for patients and the monthly cost of insurance. During the course of the discussion, Shannon Wagoner, secretary, made a motion that the MCCPS no longer schedule drivers for patients so there would be no need for liability insurance. Newly elected Vice President, Karen Jones, seconded the motion. The motion passed 5-0. The MCCPS would continue to provide gas cards for the patients who are taking treatments.
Rheadawn Street made a motion to adjourn and Linda Knight seconded it. Meeting was adjourned at 6:42 PM. The next meeting will be held at the Loogootee Library in Loogootee, Indiana on March 5, 2024 at 5:30 PM.
