Martin County Cancer Patient Services Meeting

August 6, 2024


The Martin County Cancer Patient Services met at St Mary’s Hall in Shoals, Indiana at 5:30 PM.

Rheadawn Street opened with a prayer and welcomed the guests.

In attendance were Rheadawn Street, Linda Knight, Rex Knight, Shannon Wagoner, Robin Hart, Debra Guy, Etta Franklin, Karen Jones, Andrea Deckard, Rene Phillips, Kenley Shaw, Doug Bradley, Paul Wade and Jim Force. 


The Secretary report was sent via email and reviewed by all members. Karen Jones made the motion to accept and Rheadawn Street seconded the motion. The motion carried 5-0. Linda Knight presented the treasure report. Shannon Wagoner made the motion to approve and Robin Hart seconded the motion. It was approved 5-0.


Grant Update and Donations:

Rex Knight notified the committee that the Youth Ambassador Grant is now closed. The opportunity to reapply is now open. Rex spoke with his contact at MCCF and was informed that the IMPACCT Grant cannot be used for gas (gift) cards. That was a misunderstanding by the other MCCF Grant representatives.  

The Operation Round Up Grant is coming up and we are hoping to be awarded this grant. 

Boost Grant application is due on October 31st. Will discuss more about this at the next meeting. 


Patient Update and Community Outreach:

Total Patients - 34

New Patients: 0 

Death:  Sandy Jones and Nancy Sexton passed away. Our condolences to their family and friends.


Birthday Blessings:

In August there will be 5 birthdays. We are looking for volunteers to pick up this project.  The patients love the surprise and it brightens their day.  Tammy will complete the September birthday bags. Starting October 1st the new volunteers will start gifting the patients. 


Youth Ambassador: 

No update given 


Volunteers: 

Andrea Deckard stated the Methodist Church in Loogootee will be used for the Hoosier Night Event.   She stated that Marvin Bailey had donated  the Basketball he purchased at the Catfish Auction. Her father, Steve Deckard, will offer it as an online auction item prior to the Hoosier Event. Shannon Wagoner will post and run the online auction for this item.   Doug Bradley gave an update on the Hoosier Event that will be held on November 19th.   There have been several items donated for the event:  Hoosier Hanks has donated 200 basketballs and books, IU Basketball, Regulation Ball, IU T-Shirt, Chips, Pepsi, Coke, etc. Doug asked the committee to fund the mileage for our guest speakers.   All members were in agreement to give them $100 gift cards from a fund that was not given for patient care. 


Fundraising:

Catfish Festival - Items sold $550 Donations $230

Mathia Chicken Dinner - Change of date to October 12.   Robin and Karen have received several donations of chickens from local groceries.  CVS donated bottled water.  Robin suggested that the recipe supplies be donated for preparing the chicken. We will offer 400 meals at $15.00 per meal. 

Gun Raffle:  Gun retails for $539, tax 37.73 for a total of $576.73.  Dave Harder will waive the tax.  Drawing will be held after the Chicken Dinner.  The committee decided to have Country Pines print the raffle tickets. 


Upcoming Events:

Hindostan Days - Raffle a gun, quilt and cornhole boards/bags. Volunteers needed for this event.  

Mathias Chicken Dinner - Need Volunteers to sign up for this event

Gift Bags For the Holidays - Volunteers needed to deliver Christmas bags.

Cancer Awareness Game Scheduled - Shoals High School January 25, 2024

New Business

Bob Toy yard sale will be on August 10th, 50% of the money will be donated to MCCPS, volunteers are needed on Friday to set up.  A special thank you to Bob and family!  Linda Knight made a motion to adjourn and Robin Hart seconded it. Meeting was adjourned at 7:02 PM.  The next meeting will be held at Loogootee Library, Loogootee, Indiana on August 6, 2024 at 5:30 PM.
